The citizenship of Canada can be obtained by naturalization or by birth.
In order to become a Canadian citizen, you must meet the following requirements:
- You must be a PR, fulfill all conditions related to PR, you must not be under review by Immigration Canada, or have a removal order.
- Physically present in Canada for at least 1095 days (3 years) in Canada within the last five years when you apply
- Meet all tax obligations within the last five years
- Able to speak and listen in either French or English
- Pass the test to meet knowledge requirement
- Take an oath
- Not be inadmissible
Children younger than 18 do not need to take the knowledge test and will be Canadian citizens if their parents have passed the test. 55-year-olds do not have to meet the knowledge and language requirements to become citizens. Prior to 2017, those 65 and older were not required to undergo language and knowledge tests under the Citizenship Act.
Citizenship may be revoked if you obtained citizenship through fraud, false representation, or knowingly hiding information on your citizenship or immigration application.
